Former Australia batter Damien Martyn has given his approval to a fan suggestion of removing Steve Smith from Australia’s playing XI after the Adelaide Test. The star batter failed miserably in the first Border Gavaskar Trophy Test in Perth.
The hosts conceded the match by a mammoth margin of 295 runs, as India got a headstart in the five-match series. Smith’s inability to fire with the bat was one of the main reasons, the Aussies lost the match.
According to former Australian cricketer, Damien Martyn, a failure in Adelaide for Smith should see him dropped from the playing XI.

Ahead of the second Test in Adelaide, Damien Martyn posted on X talking about Australia’s changes in the playing XI after the abysmal defeat at Perth. He asked
The 53-year-old gave his seal of approval to a fan’s X post, which talked about Smith’s potential exclusion from the team. He asked, “Does the Australian Cricket team make changes for the Adelaide test match? Or do they stick with the team from Perth? If not then what changes are you making?”
A fan then replied, “My initial reaction after Perth was to make 2 changes but the reality is I’d probably do 1. Bring in Inglis or Cartwright for Marnus. Then if Smith fails badly in Adelaide, he’s next out.”
Martyn in response wrote, “Fair point”.

The focus in the BGT now shifts to Adelaide, as India and Australia prepare for the ‘pink-ball’ Test. The only pink-ball Test of the tour will be played at the Adelaide Oval, starting from December 06, 2024. The match is scheduled to last until December 10, except in case of a premature finish, like the Perth Test.
