Site chosen for Victoria’s first AFL Max

AFL Max at Melbourne Airport will open next year.

Hume City Council will add another education and entertainment centre to its portfolio after striking a lease deal with Melbourne Airport Corporation.

The deal will see the state’s first AFL Max open next year at Melbourne Airport – a suburb as well as a facility.

Backed by the Australian Football League, the national body for Australian Rules Football, the active learning centre, with an indoor football field, trampolines, climb zones, skill testing attractions, five party rooms, a café and kitchen, is expected to attract some 200,000 visitors annually – the majority, families and schools.

Council will tip in c$10 million for the fit-out.

Upon completion it is expected to employ some 120 people.

AFL Max comes to Victoria

AFL Max is earmarked for a site beside the URBNSURF inland surf park, and Essendon Football Club High Performance Centre, also branded NEC Hangar.

Its maiden Australian facility abuts Adelaide Airport (story continues below).

“By delivering entertainment, education and engaging programs, AFL Max supports council’s vision to offer our community access to safe, unique and fun experiences,” a Hume City Council spokesperson said.

“It also presents opportunities for local schools to participate in curriculum programs such as overnight camps and excursions, that are facilitate within the safety of the venue,” they added.

Melbourne Airport is 16 kilometres north west of Melbourne’s CBD.

URBNSURF replaced the Melbourne Airport Club – a unique and popular enterprise famously set up by the first wave of airport shift staff because there was nowhere to drink after 6pm around Tullamarine.

Also today we are reporting Melbourne Airport Corporation will build a 22,000 square metre office/warehouse for Cope Sensitive Freight.
