Stefanos Tsitsipas has questioned his own hunger after a shock first-round defeat at the Australian Open on Monday.

The Greek 11th seed went down in four sets to American talent Alex Michelsen 7-5 6-3 2-6 6-4 in two hours, 43 minutes on John Cain Arena.

It means Tsitsipas has lost both his matches against the 20-year-old after being beaten in three sets at the Japan Open in October.

The Australian Open 2023 finalist was also eliminated in the first round at US Open 2024 and in the second round at Wimbledon 2024.

In his press conference after the defeat to Michelsen, Tsitsipas admitted he had a fresher mind in his younger days and said his hunger for the sport was different.

“For sure I had a fresher mind back then (in his early 20s),” Tsitsipas said.

“It seemed like I was hungrier in a completely different way than I am now.

“I would definitely say that one thing that stood out the most back then is that I had this hunger to try and make a life out of tennis and to try to have a good beginning in my tennis career and my tennis journey.

“It’s different than it is now.

“I’ve been quite well-established in the last couple of years, and I have seen the game, and I have seen all variations of games around the tour.

“I’ve done the tour over and over again, the same circle of tournaments and events. I’ve experienced what it is to be on the ATP Tour.

“I feel like there was a different energy, a different dynamic back then.”

Tsitsipas’ time at Melbourne Park in 2025 is over after he opted not to play in the men’s doubles like he has at previous editions.
