Australia will be keen to put the disappointment of their shocking group stage exit at the 2022 T20 World Cup behind when they fly to the Caribbean and the USA for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which begins in June.
The team from Down Under had a terrible 2022 T20 World Cup campaign, especially considering the fact that they entered the tournament as the defending champions after their triumph in the 2021 edition.
However, with the ICC World Test Championship and ODI World Cup silverware achieved in 2023, they are perhaps the most in-form side in world cricket at the moment.

George Bailey, the Cricket Australia (CA) chief selector, stated in February that they will be keeping a close eye on the Australian players’ performances during the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“We will also fully utilise the opportunity to monitor and watch the performances of the Australian players in the IPL immediately preceding the World Cup,” said Bailey.
The likes of Jake Fraser-McGurk, Travis Head, Pat Cummins, and Marcus Stoinis have been in great form, while superstars in Mitchell Starc, David Warner, and Glenn Maxwell have had an underwhelming season. Regardless, it would be far-fetched to say that they will be dropped from the squad, given the amount of experience that they bring to the table.
Spencer Johnson, Cameron Green, and Tim David have shown glimpses of their caliber, but are yet to really take the league by storm. Meanwhile, Matthew Wade and Nathan Ellis haven’t had much game time.
There’s also the big question mark over the selection of Steve Smith, who went unsold at the IPL 2024 auctions. Australia tried him as an opener during the T20I series against New Zealand in February, but he failed to impress.

According to reports, Cricket Australia’s Chair of National Selection Panel, George Bailey, is set to have a meeting regarding the finalisation of the 15-man Australia squad for the tournament in the coming days.
Mitchell Marsh, who was with Delhi Capitals for IPL 2024, returned to Australia earlier this month to undergo rehabilitation after suffering an injury. Presumably, if he is fit for the World Cup, he is going to lead the side, which means that he could be a part of the meeting with Bailey and Co., too.
