Heading into 2024, things are positive at the Gold Coast Suns according to their captain Tara Bohanna.
“Yeah, we’ve had a really good pre season” Bohanna said.
“We’ve had a few practice games the last couple weeks, which have been really good and then we had some pre pre season games as well, which I guess we could take some learnings to build on from the pre season games we just played.
“So, yeah, I think we’re feeling really confident. You know, we went down to Brisbane and then beat the Bulldogs, so a bit of a mixed bag of win and loss, but I think a lot of learnings and really positive stuff to come out of in terms of how we want to play football.”
Gold Coast’s practice match season saw games against Brisbane and the Western Bulldogs, which saw them pick up a win and a loss. Bohanna said that improvements in the Suns’ starts to games was a real positive they took out from the matches.
“I think we had some really good starts to the game, which is probably a bit of a change up for us,” she said. “I think sometimes we’ve started the game not as quick, but for both games we started really well.
“We kicked some goals to start the game, which is great and it’s a good confidence builder for us for the rest of the game. Had some really good ball movement that we’ve been working on, which was really pleasing to see looking at the reviews. So yeah, it’s all been positive.”
Bohanna also noted that a number of her team mates have impressed over the preseason period.
“Yeah, we’ve had a lot of girls go in and out in terms of impressing,” she said “You’ve got your classic in the midfield with Charlie [Rowbottom] and forwards of Lucy [Single], who are just building a connection that’ll be a big force to reckon with.
“Then we’ve got Jamie Stanton had a really good off season as a forward, Georgia Clayden, in the wing position there. And then we’ve had Charlotte [Wilson] and Katie [Lynch] come in from Bulldogs and Melbourne, and they’ve just been really solid in defence, building a really solid backline for us.”
