Teen sensation opens up on ’emotional’ Test call-up

Teen sensation opens up on ’emotional’ Test call-up

Teen sensation Sam Konstas will travel to Melbourne on Sunday to join up with the rest of the Australian squad ahead of the Boxing Day Test.

Stepping out on Saturday night for his Big Bash League side, the Sydney Thunder, in his last hit out before a potential Test debut, Konstas was dismissed for a duck

All eyes had been on Konstas during the Sydney Smash between the Thunder and the Sixers after the young gun was elevated to the Test squad in Nathan McSweeney’s place.

Speaking during the innings break, the 19-year-old opened up on the moment he was told he was in line for a Test debut.

“I was in the nets and I got the call from [chief selector] George Bailey and he told me I was in the Test squad,” he told Fox Cricket.

“I was so thrilled.

“I called my parents straight away. They were very emotional. Mum was in tears so I was telling her not to cry. Dad was super proud.

“It’s been an amazing journey. All the ups and downs — I’m very grateful for their sacrifices.

“They’ve been great support to me.”

Konstas will link up with the 15-man Australian squad alongside fellow hopeful Jhye Richardson.

Beau Webster and Sean Abbott also return to the squad for the marquee MCG match.

Hoping to snare the vacant opening batting spot left by McSweeney, Konstas revealed the kind gesture he received from the man he replaced.

“Nathan McSweeney is a very good player in all three formats. He actually congratulated me this morning so we’re very close mates,” he said.

“I wish him all the best.”

Last month, McSweeney, Konstas and Marcus Harris were locked in a three-way selection battle for the sport.

The decision to push out McSweeney after just three matches has turned the spotlight on Bailey and his selection panel.

While Konstas has been included as part of the Test squad, he is no guarantee to feature in Australia’s final XI. However, should he make his much-hyped debut, he will become the youngest Australian Test batsman to do so in 71 years.

“It will be a huge honour debuting. A dream come true,” he said.

“I think from memory, [I started playing cricket] at four or five years old. Dad would always train me with my older brother Billy and Johnny my twin.

“He’s retired now, my dad. I think I’ve hurt his shoulder.

McSweeney had struggled up against Indian spearhead Jasprit Bumrah but Konstas is battle-ready.

“I’m very excited [to take on India]. I want to be challenged,” he said.

“I’ve got a few plans against those bowlers. Feeling like I’m moving really nice and hopefully, I get that opportunity.

“I’m just going to react to the ball and show a bit of intent and put a bit of pressure back on the bowlers.”

With the series tied at 1-all, the fourth Test gets underway at 10:30am AEDT on Thursday.
