Nico Echavarria is a pretty good poster boy for disputing the notion that only bombers can win on the PGA Tour. Echavarria bagged his second PGA Tour title at the Zozo Championship with solid iron play, superior putting and a relatively paltry driving distance average of 261.4 metres (285.9 yards) that ranked T-59 in the 78-player field.

Saying “the iron play was on point this week”, Echavarria ranked second in the field in strokes gained/approach, racking up almost eight shots better than the field average with a split set of irons that encompasses three models: Srixon’s ZX5 Mk II in the 4 and 5-irons, the company’s ZX7 Mk II in the 6-iron and PXG’s 0317 CB for the 7-iron through pitching wedge.

Nowhere was he more “on point” than at the 179-metre, par-3 16th where his tee shot ended up 12 feet from the hole, leading to a key birdie. That set him up for the finale – a 250-metre blast from the fairway on the par-5 finishing hole with his 15-degree PXG 0311 Black Ops fairway wood that allowed him to two-putt from nearly 40 feet for the win.

Echavarria was eighth in strokes gained/putting and first in putts per GIR with his Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K 7 putter, but with a new handle.

“I [used] a new grip this week, that was the difference. I consider myself a good putter, I just needed something different. These greens are rolling so good that it wasn’t very hard to make a lot of putts… I had my coach last week in Vegas and he gave me a couple drills that we could work on in putting because I was hitting the ball fine, I was just not making a lot of putts out there. I still felt like I needed something to change, and I got here on Tuesday morning and I changed the grip [from a Garsen Ultimate to a SuperStroke Zenergy] and it paid off.”

We would say so.
