The mistake that forced Christopher McDonald to sign an NDA for Happy Gilmore 2 – Australian Golf Digest

Happy Gilmore hit theaters 18 years ago—sorry to make you feel ancient—and it almost immediately became a golf classic. We love it, we quote it, we compare all fights to the Bob Barker masterpiece, and yet, it seems like our adoration for the sports comedy pales in comparison to that of Christopher McDonald. The Shooter McGavin actor has long been a fan of the movie which made him a golf icon. Maybe a little too much of a fan in this one instance.

The memorable villain kept his dastardly ways alive, announcing that Happy Gilmore 2 was written and would be coming sooner rather than later. It just so happened that this information dropped before it was officially announced, which forced Netflix to re-break the news a few weeks later. When asked about what’s happening with the sequel, McDonald grinned and said that he got into a little hot water.

“The process is that I signed an NDA because I kinda let it leak out a little bit,” McDonald said on The Loop podcast. “Uh, so that was bad. It was my bad. But, then it broke two weeks later, three weeks later, that Netflix said, ‘Yes, we’re doing it.’

“So, yeah, I can’t say anything other than that I haven’t read it and I hear I’m in it. I just got to say I cannot wait because it’s going to be a blast.”

It seems fitting that Happy Gilmore is back due to some shenanigans from McGavin. It wouldn’t shock us if this is essentially the plot for the much-anticipated follow-up.

Even with that NDA lurking, McDonald was more than happy to talk about how he formed the Shooter McGavin character that we all know and despise, his history with the game of golf and his purely evil trash-talk game. All that (and somehow more) will be dropping next week on The Loop podcast, but there’s something you need to know as soon as possible…

If you want to find out more about what it’s like to play against McDonald/McGavin, that’s something you can do in just a few weeks time. McDonald will be participating in The M&M’s Peanut Butter Mega-Challenging Mini Golf Experience—that’s quite a mouthful—in Brooklyn, NY on August 28th, and you’ll be able to take on the actor extraordinaire on the course. There’s also the chance to win a coveted Peanut Butter jacket … plus a year’s supply of Peanut Butter M&M’s.

“I’ve been a long-time fan of M&M’s and I never shy away from a golf competition — especially one with a prize like this—so I’m looking forward to challenging mini golfers at the M&M’S Peanut Butter Championship,” McDonald announced. “Not to mention, snacking on M&M’S Peanut Butter candies while competing makes for ideal playing conditions, if you ask me.”

Golf with Shooter, potentially free M&Ms, a chance to take the (always dependable) L Train out to Brooklyn. What else could one want? You already have a bit of trash talk. Just bring up that NDA.
