The playing future of Aussie young gun Jeffrey Guan remains unclear following a statement from Australian golf’s governing bodies overnight confirmed there was “no set timeline for his return home”.
Guan, fresh off making his PGA Tour debut at the Procore Championship in California two weeks ago, where he opened with an impressive 3-under-par round before missing the cut by 1 shot, had returned home to Australia to play a NSW Open regional qualifying event in Batemans Bay when he was reportedly struck in the eye by an errant 3-wood of a pro-am participant.
The 20-year-old was treated onsite by paramedics before being airlifted to Canberra for emergency surgery.
Guan, rated by many as the country’s best young prospect since 2022 Open champion Cameron Smith, was later transferred to Sydney by car for further treatment at a specialist eye hospital.
With fears he could have sustained permanent damage to his vision, Golf NSW, Golf Australia and the PGA of Australia released a joint-statement Friday, confirming it’s still “too early to determine his long-term prognosis.”
“Golf NSW, Golf Australia, and the PGA of Australia understand the community concern surrounding Jeffrey Guan following last week’s on-course incident,” the statement read.
“Jeffrey is recovering in a Sydney hospital following eye surgery. With no set timeline for his return home, it is still too early to determine his long-term prognosis.
“Golf NSW, Golf Australia, and the PGA of Australia are working together to support Jeffrey and his family during this challenging time. We remain in close contact with them and are committed to ensuring Jeffrey receives the best possible care.
“We sincerely thank everyone for their kind messages and support offers. Further updates on behalf of Jeffrey will be provided when appropriate.”
