Another insider pointed to Lee’s botched plans for opening a retail storer inside a sprawling loft space with five-metre-high ceilings and original columns in New York’s SoHo district.
He had planned to open the retail store after staging his Fall/Winter 2001-2002 collection at the same venue, but his plans never eventuated.
‘It never opened. It is a heritage building, a 4000 square feet space and a lot of the building wasn’t to code. He couldn’t open the store until they sank a lot of money into it,’ the source said, noting that the project put huge financial pressure on Lee.

The insider also speculated that Lee’s disagreements with his powerful backer Cue Clothing Co may have added to the brand’s downfall.

However Cue reportedly ended its partnership agreement with Dion Lee and also cancelled their investment in the business, according to The Australian.
