One of Australia’s best-selling sedans, there’s a new generation Toyota Camry in Australia – although its 4.0L/100km economy comes at a cost
The new-generation 2024 Toyota Camry has arrived, with astounding hybrid fuel economy and pleasing dynamics that prove the four-door sedan has plenty of life left in it yet.
While the new Camry is built on the same TNGA platform as the previous model, there’s a brand-new interior, an overhauled powertrain, the latest safety technology and updated exterior styling – while prices are also up considerably.
Since its local launch in 1983, more than a million Camrys have been sold in Australia. More than two million – 2,168,104 to be exact – were manufactured in Australia. Of those, 1,324,991 were exported.
Three model grades will be offered for the 2024 Toyota Camry – the base Ascent, mid-spec Ascent Sport and top-spec SL, with prices starting at $39,990 and topping out at $53,990 (before on-road costs).
All 2024, new-generation models come with the same hybridised 2487cc naturally aspirated inline-four combined with an electric motor. The engine produces 138kW at 6000rpm and 221Nm from 3600rpm to 5200rpm. The electric motor contributes a maximum of 100kW and 208Nm. The maximum combined system output is 170kW, an increase of 10kW.
The hybrid system scavenges energy into a 4Ahr lithium-ion battery, while all Camry models are front-drive and use an automatic constantly variable transmission (CVT). Fuel consumption is a remarkable claimed 4.0L/100km using the Australian ADR81/02 fuel efficiency standard – an 11 percent improvement for the SL grade.
The Camry comes with a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty, while maintenance is capped at $255 per service. Service intervals are every 12 months or 15,000km. Eight colours are available – two shades of white, two shades of silver, black, red, bronze and blue.
Toyota Camry prices have crept up considerably since the pandemic. In 2020, a base model Toyota Camry Ascent hybrid cost $31,790, while the mid-spec Ascent Sport was $33,790 and the top-spec SL hybrid, $42,790, all before on-road costs.
In 2024 – just four years later, with a new generation vehicle – the entry price of Camry hybrid ownership has increased $8200, while the mid-spec is $9200 costlier and the SL, a notable $11,200 more expensive.
As well as seven airbags including a front-centre airbag, all Camry grades come with Toyota’s latest active safety technology – dubbed Safety Sense in Toyota-speak – including:
Standard equipment highlights for the base, $39,990 Ascent include:
The mid-spec Ascent Sport has everything the Ascent has, but for an extra $3000 adds highlights such as:
For an additional $11,000, the top-spec SL builds the goodies list further with these notable inclusions:
