The most in-demand tradie jobs in Australia have been revealed and workers can earn good money by picking up the jobs. Australia is facing a huge shortage of tradies, with at least half a million workers estimated to be needed in the next five years to keep up with current construction demands.

Aussies are searching for local tradies on Google more than one million times a year, with new research by BizCover revealed which trades are the most in-demand and where. This was based on search data for more than 165 trades.

Electricians were named the most in-demand trade, accounting for nearly 40 per cent of all searches at 624,540 searches per year. According to Indeed, electricians can earn about $49.74 an hour.

For someone working 40 hours a week that translates to roughly $1,990 a week, or $103,459 a year. But this could be more depending on the number of hours worked.

Former electrician Jake Mastrocola told Yahoo Finance his hours were 6:30am to 2:30pm but he often found himself pulled into last-minute jobs.

“You’d get a phone call on the way home saying, ‘Can you quickly stop into this job?’, ‘Can you change this power point?’, ‘Can quickly do this?’,” he said.

While working more hours could be more lucrative, Mastrocola admitted the lack of balance did weigh on him and eventually led to him exiting the industry.

Carpenters came in second place making up 10 per cent of searches and earning $44.33 an hour on average.

This was followed by concreters (10 per cent), roofers (9 per cent), landscapers (6 per cent), builders (5 per cent) and tilers (5 per cent).

BizCover head of marketing Sharon Kenny said the data highlighted the “significant opportunities within the sector”.

“With competitive wages and strong job security, trades provide a promising career path, especially as the construction and renovation industries thrive,” Kenny said.

“Electricians are particularly sought after, driven by infrastructure projects and the shift towards energy efficiency and renewable solutions.”

For comparison, the average full-time worker in Australia earns $1,923.60 per week on average, or $100,016 per year, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data.

The median Australian wage is lower at $1,300 per week or $67,600 per year.
