We’ve just watched a beautiful moment after the medal ceremony as Saya Sakakibara rushes to embrace her older brother Kai.
Kai was also a star BMX rider but suffered a horrific accident four years ago, suffering brain injuries that ended his career.
“It felt just like getting the medal myself,” Kai told Nine’s Brooke Boney.
“She just did it perfectly and I felt like I was part of her, so I would like to thank her for that.”
Saya also crashed out of the last Olympics in Tokyo.
“That journey tonight with Saya was one of the most special moments I have ever experienced watching the Olympics,” Karl Stefanovic says on Nine.
“It is a story of the Olympic ages. It is truly a beautiful, moving, powerful – every superlative you can find under the sun, to sum up what she has been through.
“What the family has been through, what the family has been through, and for her to climb that mountain tonight, it is so beautiful.”
