Dr. Kannangara began his illustrious career in Australia by joining the medical staff of the Australian National Youth teams just two years after his arrival. His expertise and commitment soon led him to serve as the Physician and Consultant for the Australian Olympic teams at the Barcelona, Atlanta, and Sydney Games. His influence extended across multiple sports, including football, cricket, netball, and hockey, where he provided invaluable medical support at World Cup events.
In football, Dr. Kannangara’s impact was profound, spanning nearly all national teams from youth squads to the Socceroos. He accompanied teams on numerous local and international tours, ensuring the well-being of players and staff alike. He was a pioneer in his field, always striving for excellence and innovation in sports medicine.
His dedication to the sport was further recognised when he became the first Australian to serve as a FIFA Medical Committee Member from 1999 to 2006. Dr. Kannangara’s outstanding contributions were celebrated with his induction into the Football Australia Hall of Fame in 2002.
