Wade begins new role as Aussie retirement confirmed

Matthew Wade has retired from international cricket and will begin a career in coaching.

The Australian keeper-batter on Tuesday confirmed he has played his last game in national colours, although will continue to play for Tasmania and in the Big Bash League.

The 36-year-old represented Australia at this year’s T20 World Cup where he failed to contribute with the bat.

He retires with a total of 36 Tests, 97 one-day internationals, and 92 T20 internationals to his name.

He had flagged retirement ahead of the 2022 World Cup but opted to continue playing for his country.

He will now instead join the coaching staff for the men’s T20 series against Pakistan, which begins in Melbourne on Monday.

Wade has been coaching Tasmanian youth teams but hopes to transition into full-time senior coaching after hanging up his pads.

“I was fully aware my international days were most likely over at the end of the last T20 World Cup,” Wade said on Tuesday.

“My international retirement and coaching has been a constant conversation with George (Bailey) and Andrew (McDonald) over the past six months.

“Coaching has been on my radar over the last few years and thankfully some great opportunities have come my way, for which I am very grateful and excited.

“I will continue to play BBL and the odd franchise league over the summer months but around those commitments as a player I am investing heavily in my coaching.”
