What Nick Kyrgios said to Jannik Sinner after he won the Australian Open this year as online feud continues

Nick Kyrgios is not Jannik Sinner’s biggest fan after he called for the World number one to be banned following his two positive drug tests.

Sinner was found to have small traces of anabolic steroid Clostebol in his system at the Indian Wells Masters in March.

As a result the 23-year-old lost the ranking points and prize money he earned at the Masters 1000 event, but he was allowed to continue playing while the investigation was ongoing.

This was a controversial decision and Kyrgios was one of those most vocal about Jannik Sinner receiving a punishment.

But before the news stunned the tennis world, Kyrgios and Sinner seemed to have a good relationship with one another, which was on display at the Australian Open.

What did Nick Kyrgios say to Jannik Sinner at the 2024 Australian Open?

Nick Kyrgios, who did not play at the 2024 Australian Open, was part of the media team and was seen conducting some on court interviews after players had finished their matches.

Sinner claimed the first Grand Slam title of his career when he came from two sets down to defeat Daniil Medvedev 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 at Melbourne Park.

Following the match, Kyrgios said to the Italian: “Hey, Jannik, well done. Grand slam champion. My question to you is how much can I pay you to be my coach so I can win a Grand Slam?”

To which Sinner replied: “Tough question, Nick! For you, maybe I’ll do it for free. What is for sure is that everyone is missing you. You are this kind of player who you don’t see around so often.

“Your game style and the way you behave on court, you are different. These kind of players we need. I hope you are getting back. I am missing you.

“We walked a bit before my second round match and it was a great emotion to see you. I hope to see you back as soon as possible, also you are a potential Grand Slam champion and I think you know it.”

Nick Kyrgios took aim at Jannik Sinner following positive drug tests

Any friendship Kyrgios and Sinner had now appears to be in disarray following the 29-year-old’s comments about the two-time Grand Slam champion.

For example, he responded to a tweet from a fan in which he agreed that Sinner should be banned after he defeated Novak Djokovic to win the Shanghai Masters.

While competing at the US Open, Sinner was asked if he would let Kyrgios interview him after he comments about him, and he did not give much away.

“I don’t know. I don’t want to respond to what he said,” he answered. “Everyone is free to say everything. It’s ok. If that is the case, let’s see. It’s gonna be different for sure (laughing).

“I don’t know what to say. Maybe I say something now and then the reaction will be something else. I’m always quite relaxed. I’m someone who forgets things quite fast. Everyone is free to say everything. It is what it is.”

When will Nick Kyrgios play tennis again?

Kyrgios is never far away from the headlines due to his outspoken nature, but he has made very few headlines on the court of the late.

This is because the 2022 Australian Open doubles winner has not played since losing to Wu Yibing at the Stuttgart Open in June 2023.

He has played just one competitive match since 2022 after struggling with knee and wrist injuries, but he appears ready to reurn.

In fact, Kyrgios wants to commence the 2025 season in front of his home fans at the Australian Open. “I will be playing the Australian Open this summer,” he told a panel at SXSW (South By Southwest) in Sydney.

“I just miss being out there playing in front of a home crowd. We’ve got such a crowd of guys at the moment like Alex de Minaur playing amazing tennis.”
