But despite the stellar performances we have seen so far, there has also been a spotlight on the number of players missing this year’s tournament, chief amongst them global stars like Jason Roy, Harry Brook and Wanindu Hasaranga.

Why did RR star Adam Zampa pull out of IPL 2024?

Another significant overseas absentee from the tournament is Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa. Zampa was an integral part of Australia’s T20 World Cup win in 2021, and their World Cup victory in India in 2023. Part of the Rajasthan Royals squad, he pulled out before the start of the tournament, citing personal reasons.

Speaking to the Willow Talk podcast, Zampa opened up on why he chose to skip the IPL this year, saying,

There are several reasons why the IPL wasn’t for me this year. I think the most important one was the fact that it’s a World Cup year and I’m completely drained from 2023. I did the full IPL last year. Obviously, the World Cup was three months in India as well. So I had the best intentions of trying to play the IPL again this year.

But once push came to shove, I felt like I just couldn’t really offer the Rajasthan Royals the best version of myself and looking forward to the World Cup, that’s what’s more important to me.

Zampa further explained that the uncertainty over his playing time at RR was also a contributing factor. With overseas player limits, R Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal are RR’s lead spinners and Zampa played just six matches last year. With no guarantee over whether he would play “two games or four games or six games”, he decided the best decision would be to skip the season.

What is Adam Zampa’s record in IPL?

The Spinner as represented three franchisees in his IPL career and has played 20 matches thus far where he picked up an impressive 29 wickets.
