‘Will always remember’: 20yo Aussie claims first grand slam win, scores massive 0k AO payday

Twenty-year-old Australian Talia Gibson has emerged victorious for her maiden grand slam victory — and a big payday — on Monday to progress to the Australian Open’s second round.

Gibson defeated Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez — 94th-ranked — 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 on Court 3 to become the first Aussie through to the next stage of the tournament after Daria Saville, Adam Walton, Omar Jasika and Li Tu all fell short on Sunday.

Her progression to the second round ensures she pockets at least $200,000.

“It’s a day that 20-year-old Talia Gibson will always remember — the day she picked up her first grand slam main draw win on home soil, right here at the Australian Open,” Nine’s broadcast remarked.

A nervous start threatened to cost Gibson, the world No.150, against Sonmez, but she held her serve to save the match at 5-4 down in the second set before clinching the tie-break and breaking her Turkish rival in the second hour of the clash.

Sonmez, 22, struggled in the 26-degree heat and wore an ice pack around her neck at change of ends during the second set before she lost her temper in the tie-break.

She repeatedly admonished herself after the West Australian skipped away to secure three set points, and her frustration boiled over when she whacked her racquet against her hip and thigh repeatedly after an unforced error early in the final set.

Gibson hit 11 winners to four in the second set to gain a foothold in the match and then got her serve going in the decider as she sent down three aces to claim a 6-1 victory.

Sonmez, who was also in search of a first grand slam victory, was unable to regain her composure and held her head in her hands after giving away a rare foot fault on her second serve late in the match.

Gibson’s next opponent is 11-seed Spanish star Paula Badosa, who toppled Wang Xinyu on Sunday.

Twenty-seventh seed Jordan Thompson does battle with German Dominik Koepfer in the afternoon, while a 7pm clash with the British Jacob Fearnley awaits fan-favourite Nick Kyrgios at John Cain Arena.
