‘Would not rule him out’: Tubby’s Test call on teen prodigy

‘Would not rule him out’: Tubby’s Test call on teen prodigy

Former Australian Test captain Mark Taylor believes teen prodigy Sam Konstas could be firming for a spot in the upcoming series against India.

The 19-year-old shined for NSW in the opening Sheffield Shield match, hitting back-to-back hundreds against South Australia.

The youngster could now come into Test calculations with Cam Green’s injury likely to rule him out for the five-match series against India.

Smith’s stint at the top of the order so far hasn’t been successful.

Taylor believes the Green injury presents a chance for prolific Shield runscorer Cam Bancroft to be recalled.

“It’s an awkward one isn’t it? Cam Green was out of the Australian side during the Ashes series of last year and Mitch Marsh came in but Australia were very keen to get him back in,” Taylor said on Nine’s Wide World of Sports.

“… I think Smith will move back to No.4. So the question is who will open? I’d love to see a right-handed opening batsman get the opportunity. And to me at the moment … I would have Bancroft penciled in alongside (Usman) Khawaja.”

Khawaja has been a consistent performer at the top of the order for Australia but questions remain about how long he’ll continue.

The 37-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down with his batting, but will turn 38 during the India series.

Taylor believes this is another situation the Australian selectors need to prepare for.

“He’s not going to play that much longer either so we’re going to need to find another opener so that’s when I’d then think about going back to a (Marcus) Harris or (Matt) Renshaw to replace the left-handed Khawaja so that’s what I’d be thinking at the moment,” he said.

“There’s some big Shield games coming up. NSW play Victoria in the next week or so, that’ll be a big game. If Sam Konstas is playing well I would not rule him out of playing the first Test match.”

The focus on the Shield is one of intrigue considering it isn’t the barometer it was once was for selectors considering Bancroft has been leading runscorer for the last two years.

Taylor hopes the competition is back as a focal point for selectors.

“I certainly hope so,” he said.

“It’s certainly been diluted, because there’s so much cricket on … it’s hard for a selector to get an absolute feel on any individual and what sort of form they’re in.

“Right now the Shield is absolutely vital because I think as I said, if Konstas plays well and if Bancroft is not in form for that first Test match I’d be going to Konstas and giving him a go.”
