Young gun sensationally dumped for Champions Trophy

Young gun sensationally dumped for Champions Trophy

Australia has recalled its big guns but dropped a young star for next month’s Champions Trophy as the team looks to add more silverware to a bulging cabinet.

The team heads to the one-day tournament in Pakistan and the UAE fresh off claiming the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in eight years.

The Aussies also hold the Ashes and both World Cups. They will be looking to take the Champions Trophy off Pakistan.

Chief selector George Bailey on Monday unveiled a 15-player squad for the Champions Trophy.

It includes skipper Pat Cummins and fellow fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, both of whom are skipping the tour to Sri Lanka later this month.

Cummins is staying home for the birth of his child, and is also battling an ankle issue, while Hazlewood battled injury throughout the summer.

Young batting tyro Jake Fraser-McGurk has been sensationally dumped from the squad despite being touted as a long-term talent.

The squad is only preliminary, though, and may be changed before the players board the plane.

“This is a balanced and experienced squad with the core having been involved in the previous one-day World Cup, the West Indies series, last year’s successful tour of the UK and the more recent Pakistan home series,” Bailey said.

“It offers a variety of options for touring management depending on opposition and the conditions that may present in Pakistan.”

The same squad will be used for an ODI in Sri Lanka following the two-Test series.

Veteran players Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa are in the squad after being snubbed from the Test team for Sri Lanka.
